The work of JASON RANSOM revolves around the idea of the application of paint based upon the subjective and unconscious expression of the artist and the subject. These gestures are avenues in which he tries to communicate the inner essence and energy between the artist and the subject.

8th Annual Summer All Media Exhibition
Artist JASON RANSOM of HOUSTON, TEXAS has received SIX Special Recognition Merit Awards for his artwork in the "8th Annual Summer All Media Juried Online International Art Exhibition” hosted by Upstream People Gallery. This international exhibition received approximately 600 entries from around the world by 156 artists which were selected by the juror Larry Bradshaw, Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, U. S. A.
Professor Bradshaw states this about this specially recognized work:
"JASON RANSOM of Houston, Texas expresses passionately with his oil paintings using strong forceful brush work. “Jackie” with the red and blue and horizontal positioning of the face, is very dramatic. Other works that contain this high level of expression are “Untitled-P08”, “Untitled-P10”, “Untitled-P13”, “Untitled-P14” and “Untitled-P19”. All are intensely rich and strongly presented."
The exhibition will be featured through August 31, then can be viewed in the archives section online through July 31, 2010 at www.upstreampeoplegallery.com. Pictures with more information about this work can be downloaded here (virus free) (fourth on the page; just click on the desired image)
IN THE ARTIST'S OWN WORDS...
My work represents a continuous process of painting, scraping off and applying painter over older images on the canvas until I have found something that surprises me and allows other viewers to take part in the experience of "finding". Regardless of whether it is from a photo, live session, or a mental image, I try to capture various types of emotions from within myself and from the individual being painted , and transpose those emotions into the figure. However, although somewhat unintentional, I try to leave some ambiguity about the particular feeling captured within the figure, so that the viewer may feel open to receiving different thoughts, feelings and emotions from the figure itself.

IN THE ARTIST'S OWN WORDS...
My work mainly centers on the figure and the portrait. The saying goes - the human face is a road map to the soul, and it is in this thought that I attempt to place upon the canvas the abstract concepts that exist inside the outward personae. I then try to translate the subjective and unconscious expression of the artist and the subject through the medium of oil paint. Although most of my work contains lines that are broken, violent and wild and paint is applied with vigorous and heavy impasto, these gestures are only avenues that I use instinctively to communicate the inner essence and energy between the artist and the subject; however, they are truly incidental to the search for meaning and truth in my paintings. I am after some essence of a person, some distillation of character, and essential mood; therefore, for me, the repeated scrapings and re-starting of the project are necessary for my discovery of the subject. With each attempt, I try to find something true between the subject and what is on the canvas.
In Untitled P02 and P05, I tried to find the essence and the truth of the subject within a microcosm that could fit onto the canvas. The ambiguity and anonymity are two elements within the paintings that allow for many emotions. One reason that I do not like to put titles to my paintings is that I try to leave open the multiple references that people can bring with themselves as they view the paintings. I feel that if a painting already has a title, it automatically impresses upon the viewer a given idea in which to place the particular painting.
